What we’re doing!

Many of our member task forces are holding events this October to honor Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Here are their flyers!

The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with the Hampshire County Bar Association, is pleased to invite you to register for the upcoming Judges’ Panel on Thursday, October 30th from 3-4:30: Answers and Questions About Coercive Control.

It will be held in The Old Courtroom at the Northampton District Court. Please see the attached form for more details, and RSVP to Anna Wardwell by Wednesday, October 15th if you wish to attend.

We are excited to have a Probate and Family Court Justice on the panel for the first time, along with four District Court Judges and Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan as our moderator.

Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone who might be interested!

RNEDV members and allies are conducting a survey on survivor court experiences. Please share the survey! It can be filled out by survivors, advocates, or someone else helping a survivor with court. It can be filled out while at court or anytime after court. The survey is available in English and Spanish, and as a hard copy and on line. Feel free to contact us for more information!

The Greenfield Mayor's Task Force Against Domestic Violence just released a "Walking Map" to ensure local survivors know what support services are available and how to get to them from downtown by walking.  The Mayor's Task Force meets monthly to focus on the town's role in supporting survivors and ending abuse.

The Ware River Valley Domestic Violence Task Force attended National Night Out on August 4th. Community members responded to questions about what advice they would give someone about relationships, how they want to be treated, and what respect looks like to them. We also connected with a police officer who wants to join the Task Force, got invited to come to a Select Board meeting, and found someone from Knights of Columbus who offered to manage the audio for our upcoming Annual Walk. It takes a village!

The Franklin County Domestic Violence Task Force formally launched on May 8th! A group of about 40 community members, survivors, agency stakeholders, local businesses and others gathered at the Salasin Center in Greenfield for the launch. The group will meet monthly and work on a variety of projects and joint initiatives to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence. For more information, email ruralnedv@gmail.com.

On Friday, February 28, 2025 the RNEDV held a Legislative and Stakeholder Breakfast in Greenfield. Attendees came from Boston, the Berkshires, and from Franklin, Hampshire and Worcester counties to  discuss how rural community-based task forces are working on preventing and ending domestic violence, the need for funding to support community engagement, and the need for state policies that integrate the voices of rural communities.

Here are some pictures from the event, as well as the
PowerPoint for the event, and RNEDV Recommendations for Making Rural Communities Safer

In May, the Ware River Valley Domestic Violence Task Force started reading picture books about consent and boundaries at the local children’s libraries and pre-schools. With a grant from Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley the Task Force has purchased sets of books for about a dozen different schools, libraries, and day care centers in our region. Task Force volunteers are reading books and doing art projects for young children in partnership with our allied organizations. This is one of current prevention efforts. It takes a village.

In April and February 2025, the Ware River Valley DV Task Force and the Ware High School DV Task Force visited all lunch periods for grades 7-12. Students spun a wheel with various questions and then wrote answers to the questions below. They got www.loveisrespect cause bracelets for their participation. We also walked around the lunchroom and gave out “I ask for consent” pens and pins, and gave our bookmarks with QR codes to quizzes from https://www.loveisrespect.org/search-our-resources/ This was an easy project that didn’t ask too much from the school except to set up a table for us.

In February 2025, the Southern Hilltown DV Task Force sponsored a training on the new MA Coercive Control Law for task force and community members. Esther Tutu from Community Legal Aid did the training. In March, the Ware River Valley DV Task Force held a similar training. Attendees practiced filling out an affidavit after the training – an eye-opening experience for everyone.

Southern Hills, Ware, and Gardner DV Task Forces use local community members in their outreach ads. Below are some of the ads we all use on an on-going basis.
